If like us you are beyond ready for Spring to arrive and want to make the most of it, one way would be to put these cold days to use, by getting a head start on your Spring cleaning. You might be thinking there’s still plenty of opportunities for your family to tread in snow, salt and mud but there’s a few things to help get you started and you might find that it lightens the load especially when adding your organizing skills later on. This way you will have more time to actually enjoy the warm sunny days as soon as they arrive and you can’t argue with that! These tips will not only help point you in the right direction when it comes to cleaning some of those often forgotten places but also ways to make it easier.
Keep necessary cleaning products within reaching distance
When you start to tackle your Spring cleaning you want to make sure to have your cleaning supplies handy and nearby. Not only will it save you the hassle of going to find a specific cleaning product to get the job done but it will also be a big time saver! The best way to accomplish this is to have a cleaning bucket or basket fully stocked with everything you need from cleaning products to brushes, sponges, and towels.
Suit up!
Wearing comfortable clothing is also important when it comes to cleaning! You want to make sure that you can easily move around and it’s also important to wear clothes that you aren’t worried about getting dirty or even getting the occasional bleach spot. Along with this it’s worth mentioning that you should probably wear some rubber gloves while cleaning. Not only will gloves protect you from all the germs and grime but also the cleaning products you might be using.
Turn on your air conditioner’s fan before getting started
Probably not the most ideal on a cold day but once you get moving it might actually be helpful. However, that’s not the only reason for this suggestion, it’s important to remember that dusting and vacuuming can send a lot of fine particles into the air and by turning on your fan before and after dusting, any lingering particles can be pulled through your home’s air filter.
Clean from left to right, and top to bottom
It’s important to clean from left to right and top to bottom for two simple reasons. By following this direction while cleaning, you are insuring that you are not re-contaminating areas and most importantly you won’t miss any areas because you are using a systematic way to clean.
Start at the front door
Your front door area might require a lot of your energy because it is one of the most trafficked areas in your home. It’s also the first area people see when the stop by and you’ll want to make sure it makes a good first impression. It’s also important to remember that dirt in this area gets spread throughout the entire house so by keeping this area clean can help keep the rest of your home cleaner from dirt and germs. A good place to start is your doormats! Whether you have one inside, outside or both you will want to get rid of dirt and salt by washing them if possible or by giving them a good shake outside.
Top areas that need Spring cleaning
We all know that there are always a couple of places or things throughout the house that are often overlooked during your regular cleaning so here’s a helpful list in case you need a reminder:
- Curtains and blinds can collect a lot of dust over time and everyday you open and close them, the collected dust is spread throughout the house.
- The refrigerator’s condenser coils are often difficult to reach and therefore seldom cleaned. However their location makes for the perfect spot for dust to collect, which can cause the unit to shut down after some time.
- Not only can your washer and dryer collect a lot of dust and grime in the back and along the sides but they should also be cleaned on the inside once and a while.
- Air vents can also collect a lot of dust and begin to look grimy but can easily be cleaned using a microfiber cloth.
- Lastly, possibly one of the most overlooked areas are your houseplants, artificial or not that can collect a lot of dust and can be wiped clean with a damp cloth.
